Where was I?
I've no idea what I've blogged about and what I haven't blogged about, but I'm not going to go re-readin' my blog posts right now 'cause I have to say BOOYAH THAT WAS A GOOD PERFORMANCE!
Just saw True West at NVA in Carlsbad, and ok, sure, I'm partial to Fran, he's my acting teacher and all, but HOT DAMN that was a good, brave, strong performance! WOW. Seriously. When people talk about making strong choices, I think I tend to underestimate what that can really mean. I have no idea how you decide whether a character will work within a script or violate it, but I really never EVER expected to see that character in that script (not that I knew it in its entirety or anything) but it WORKED and I'm just so pleased. It's like when I saw Three Sisters there and I realized you CAN play with characters and have fun and it's not always serious serious serious - it's like that was Lesson One and this was Lesson Two or heightening or whatever. And yes, I KNOW I'm babbling, but seriously - that was great.
On a related note, the improv people are going to hate me one day. Not only do I have the idea now that Chekhov isn't naturalistic or boring at ALL, now I think Shepard is funny/absurdist (although kinda sad and violent and fatalistic too?), and I have this feeling that that's not what most people think of when they say "do a scene in the style of...." Oh well. The rest of the world can just be WRONG.
That's my opinion at this second, and I'm sticking to it. For now.
