Gross!
Okay, so one of the lessons I SHOULD HAVE learned by now is not to trust my mother's cooking. Right? But no, she says "these are really really good, and so easy...." And the kicker is that she tells me that my Aunt Joan, who is just a FABULOUS cook, makes hers almost the same way....
From the beginning: Mom gives me a recipe for scalloped potatoes. With ham. How hard can it be, right? Just layer potatoes with ham in a dish, salting, peppering and flouring each layer. Pour milk on top. Add some butter. Bake until the potatoes are soft.
Something very bad happened in my oven. The oven gnomes crept in and replaced the milk and butter with whey and leftover cheese curd boogers. I'm guessing you have to use milk with fat in it? Skim doesn't work? Maybe a little detail you LEFT OUT, MOM????
Blech.
We're having salad and pie for dinner. We had an appetizer of sauteed potatoes and ham (the stuff that wouldn't fit in the pan for the scalloped potatoes) - THAT was good, at least....
Oh, by the way, my beans are fabulous. They're very satisfying plants, you know.
